About Hope and Life: The Hope and Life Movement was introduced in Mumbai by Mrs Antoinette D’Souza from Santa Cruz after her return from France in the 1980s. It was due to the able guidance and encouragement of Bishop Bosco Penha that the Movement took root in Mumbai.
The Founder President – late Mrs Corinne Rodrigues along with the Core Group members took up the challenge and leadership to spearhead this Movement to many parishes in Mumbai. Now we have a very dynamic widow – Mrs Lorna D’Souza heading the Movement.
The Hope and Life Movement is well organized with an Executive Committee headed by a President and assisted by a team of smiling and willing widows.
On January 31, 2010, the Hope and Life Movement celebrated its Silver Jubilee Year at St Joseph the Worker Church, Bandra (E) on a grand scale commencing with a concelebrated Mass by Bishop Bosco Penha and team, followed by a cultural programme. It was attended by well over 1500 widows from all over Mumbai.
The Hope and Life Movement at St Thomas Church, Goregaon (E) was started by Fr. Joaquim D’Costa and Fr. Savio Rodrigues. The first President was Mrs Leticia Goveas folllowed by Mrs Rosie D’Silva, Mrs Louella Miranda, Mrs Kate Alvares and at present, Mrs Edociana Daniel.
Summary of Work: Our Spiritual Director is Fr. Joe D’Mello. There are approx. 15-20 members. We enjoy get-togethers, celebrations at Easter and Christmas, Mother’s Day, Parish Feast and annual picnics. These are much looked forward to activities. There is also the spiritual aspect when the members attend Retreats, Holy Hour, pilgrimages, etc. They also spend time in prayer. As a group, they identify the needs of their parish and involve themselves in social outreach for the less privileged. This gives them a sense of fulfilment and makes them feel good and empowered. Our monthly meetings offer the members fellowship and emotional support.
We would be glad if more widows from our parish would come forward and join the Hope and Life Movement.
Meeting Date: First Sunday of every month at 7:00 p.m.
Annual Marian Pilgrimage
The members of Hope and Life Association of our parish had organised “Marian Pilgrimage” to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Borivli on Saturday 10th September, 2011.
The part of the Hope and Life Movement’s Annual programme is have an Annual Pilgrim to the dedicated to Our Lady. This pilgrimage is always held in the month of September.
The 15 members of our Parish took part in this pilgrimage. Fr. Barthol Barretto, the Parish Priest of I.C. Church welcomed the members. A sumptuous breakfast was offered to the members. Thereafter members assembled in the church for personal meditation and prayers. At 10 a.m. Fr. Vincent Barboza, priest from I.C. Church, was the preacher for the day was introduced to us by Fr. Joe D’mello, our Spiritual director.
Fr. Vincent, in his talk highlighted on ‘Our Blessed Mother and her Immaculate Conception’. He also spoke about the ‘Queenship of Mary’. It was indeed a very Inspiring and thought provoking talk. All of us were really edified with this talk. Afterwards, there was an interactive session in which Fr. Vincent answered all our queries about Mother Mary. We were indeed very lucky to get Fr. Vincent as a Speaker for the day. At end each member came forward and expressed what they gained from today’s session and thanked Fr. Vincent.
After which we had a short intercessory prayer conducted by Fr. Joe D’Mello. Our Spiritual director Fr. Joe D’mello accompanied us and remained with us for the entire pilgrimage, which was indeed heartening. He has been a Pillar of Hope and Strength for us. We the members of Hope and Life are very much grateful to Fr. Joe, for his constant support and the encouragement.
